I had occasion to study Dickinson for the first time at a recent education retreat. The setting couldn't have been more choice: Pilgrim Pines, a camp in southern New Hampshire run by the Evangelical Covenant Church. There, amid boulder-filled woods by a misty lake, I combed through some of Dickinson's 1,800 poems, none of which were published under her name in her lifetime.
